Furnishing Your Oceanfront Vacation Rental

When furnishing your beachfront vacation rental, there are several things you should keep in mind. Bethany Pearce, an experienced vacation property manager and designer shares her tips:

"The key pieces of furniture in your oceanfront cottage or home should be of good quality. Purchasing good quality solid wood pieces for the dining room, bedroom and living room will save money in the long run because they will not need to be repaired or replaced as often as cheaper quality pieces.

As an example, I manage two vacation rentals on Vancouver Island that are of the same age. One unit has the original furnishings that the owner bought through a Canadian furniture company. Those pieces have not had to be repaired or  replaced in nearly 20 years. The owner also made a good choice in selecting pieces that were timeless so they are not out of date in appearance. In contrast, the second unit I look after has furniture that was purchased at a big-box store. The pieces in that vacation rental have had to be repaired or replaced.

If you are an owner offering family-friendly accommodations or pet-friendly vacation rentals, the need for higher quality furnishings is even more important. Because the property welcomes kids and also pets, it is wise to choose pieces that are not too ornate, fragile, or do not include upholstery that can be stained or damaged.

If you are looking to rent a vacation property that is family-friendly or pet-friendly, focus on selecting cottages that are well-appointed with quality furnishings and less clutter. This will help insure you have a stress-free vacation because you are not worrying about what could be broken or damaged.

In my next blog post on I will provide my recommendations for soft furnishings and accessories such as sofas, decorator pillows and linens."
